Notable Past Events

The 2nd Annual Sacramento Lootenanny sponsored by the Poinsettia Nevada Chamber of Commerce was as brilliant a success as the original, with food, drink, music and merriment from 2 pm until well after dark. Check out our FB page for photos. The Nevada-loving sponsors of the event donated their time and talent, rounded up raffle and auction items, invited their friends and otherwise combined to create a magical afternoon-into-evening. It was such an enjoyable event that we're thinking of doing something similar here on the Comstock later in the year, when our Sacramento friends can join us.
Our Soup & Salad Social at the Storey County Senior Center in Virginia City on April First was a delightful affair. This was our first fund-raiser of 2012, a fabulous home-made dinner with the Comstock's own Squeek Steele at the piano. The event was the occasion to renew connections with one another and to roll up our sleeves for the endgame with CMI. So much fun we've decided to do more of these! Oh, and we raised a few hundred dollars to help prevent pit mining on the Comstock.
Wednesday January 25
The EPA sent CMI a "Letter of Inquiry" (you can read it here) requiring the company to document in detail its activities within the Carson River Mercury Superfund Site (CRMS). Finally the feds are in the game!

Saturday October 22
Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks returned to Piper's Opera House to showcase songs from the new "Tangled Tales" album, in a benefit performance for the CRA. Dan's first performance was in 1965 at the Red Dog as a member of the Charlatans, and when he heard of the threat of pit mines on the Comstock he offered to bring the Hot Licks and perform in concert.

Saturday October 8
"Crooners on the Comstock" starring Richie Ballerini and Max Amillion standing in for Frank, Dean, Sammy and the other cool cats with swingin' sounds carried their swooning audience back 50 years.

October 4
The Storey County Commission accepted the recommendation to grant CMI its second SUP in a dramatically reduced boundary, attaching 37 explicit regulatory conditions before allowing drilling in the Virginia City National Historic Landmark.

September 10 & 11

Leading artists around Nevada brought recent work for our great Reno fundraising Art Show and Sale at the Sierra Arts Foundation Gallery in the old Riverside Hotel downtown. The two-day exhibit brought hundreds of visitors and raised thousands of dollars in support of our cause.

At about midnight on Thursday August 18 the Storey County Planning Commission voted unanimous approval of a Special Use Permit allowing CMI to conduct exploration drilling in Gold Canyon north of Devil's Gate about as far as the Cabin in the Sky. We have appealed the recommendation.

SILVERTOWN, an Evening of Musical Memories at The Washoe Club in Virginia City, a lineup of bands that helped create the musical heritage of the Comstock. It was a huge success: great music, plenty drinks and dinner, and our biggest fund-raiser to date. Click Here for the poster, you can print it out at home.

Here is Reno Channel 2's coverage of our problem with pit mining here in the Virginia City National Historic Landmark, plus two of the 'public comments' at the Storey County Planning Commission Meeting July 7; we'll post our own videos of the entire event shortly.

We are local citizens dedicated to protecting the Virginia City National Historic Landmark, the state's Comstock Historic District and our peaceful communities from the devastation of large scale modern industrial pit mining by Comstock Mining Inc. This would never be tolerated in Williamsburg or any other National Landmark, and we won't tolerate it here.

Our Meet 'n' Greet at Maynard Station, Gold Hill was a lot of fun and a good success; about 100 attended. We affected some investor decisions, enticed John Winfield and Corrado de Gasperis out into the sunlight, and raised $700 from our supporters. Read All About It!
Here's a surprisingly negative review of Comstock Mining Incorporated, along with this addendum, and now this one about us. And now an update about the company's recent activities.

"When groups compete, it's the cohesive, cooperative, internally altruistic groups that win"

CRA volunteers have been canvassing Gold Hill and Virginia City residents to provide information and request signatures on a petition opposing pit mining in the National Landmark. Residents are overwhelmingly opposed to pit mining, on the order of 20 to 1. If you are a Storey County resident and would like to sign the petition, send us an email and a volunteer will bring by a petition to sign. More than 400 petitions signed in Storey County so far.
